A short film in the making

Teen die Stormwinde in

In 1726 a young Frisian, Gaele Andries, signed on with the Dutch East India Company to sail to the East. He never got there. This is the start of a short film about his life, made from the book by Ernst van der Walt.

Trailer, 1 minute. In Afrikaans, with English subtitles.

The short film

Gaele's journey, on screen

The film follows Gaele from Friesland, through the storms of the voyage, to the Cape in 1727. It is in Afrikaans, with English subtitles.

This trailer is the first part. The rest is in production, scene by scene, and we will share it as it is finished.

The book

The life of Gaele, told in his own voice

In Teen die Stormwinde in, Ernst van der Walt tells Gaele's life as if Gaele were telling it himself: his farewell to Friesland, the voyage, his years at the Cape, and his last years as a stock farmer in the Roggeveld.

It rests on the records: ship lists, Cape court papers, estate inventories and more than a thousand notes. The film is made from it.

Of the Forest, the free story on this site, is a separate book: told in English, a chapter a week. Read it here.
